The Used EV Experiment: A Personal Journey
As a car expert with a penchant for unique automotive experiences, I decided to take a leap and purchase a used electric vehicle (EV). It was a bold move, especially considering my past encounters with unreliable cars. But I was curious: could a used EV be a smart choice, or would it turn into another automotive headache?
The Decision: Why Go Electric?
Primarily, it was a financial decision. EVs promise significant savings, especially with home charging. I had the advantage of a home charging point, which made the prospect of owning an EV even more appealing. Additionally, the environmental benefits and the value proposition at the time were hard to ignore.
Choosing the Right EV
I had my heart set on the Hyundai Ioniq 5 for its retro-futuristic design, comfortable ride, and versatile interior. Finding a three-year-old model with a couple of years of warranty remaining was the cherry on top. The buying process was surprisingly smooth, thanks to a helpful salesperson who located the perfect car for me.
Battery Health: A Critical Factor
One of my key concerns was battery degradation. I insisted on a battery health test, which revealed an impressive 99% of its original capacity remaining. This low degradation rate over three years was a relief and a crucial factor in my decision to purchase.
Real-World Range and Charging
The official range of my 73kWh Premium model is 298 miles, but in reality, it translates to about 240 miles on motorways during the summer, dropping to around 200 miles in winter. Extreme cold can further reduce this range. However, the Ioniq 5's rapid charging capability, up to 221kW, is a game-changer. In practice, it often recharges faster than we can take a break, making long trips manageable.
Range Anxiety and Public Charging
I've experienced range anxiety a couple of times, especially during winter when longer charging stops are needed. Public charging can be a hassle, with high costs on motorways and the need for apps to find working chargers. However, with proper planning and the right tools, it's manageable.
Cost of Ownership
The Ioniq 5 has been a revelation in terms of running costs. During my 12,000-mile journey, I've spent an estimated £540 on electricity, compared to £1,822 for my previous diesel Skoda Superb. However, servicing costs can be higher due to battery coolant changes. Public charging costs are significantly higher than home charging, which is a key advantage of owning an EV.
The Pros and Cons
I love the Ioniq 5's comfort, especially during long trips, and the cost savings are undeniable. Pre-conditioning the interior is a luxury, especially in extreme weather. However, I miss the spacious boot of my old Superb, and the Ioniq 5's interior feels a bit flimsy in comparison. Small irritations, like the indicator stalk, can be frustrating.
Depreciation and Future Considerations
Depreciation has been an interesting journey. Initially, the car's value dropped, but with the fuel crisis, it rebounded. I believe a battery health check and a long vehicle warranty are essential for peace of mind when considering a used EV. Certain models may suffer greater degradation, so thorough checks are crucial.
Final Thoughts
My used EV experiment has been an eye-opener. It's proven that EVs can be a brilliant choice, offering comfort, savings, and a unique driving experience. While there are challenges, especially with public charging and certain model-specific issues, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. I would certainly consider another used EV, but with the right checks and warranties in place.
